Course Description

This course is brought to you through a partnership with LEND to assist the healthcare professional expand ideas of promoting wellness in youth with disabilities. Our innovative Piece it Together (PIT) program,  created for transitional age youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and mild Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD), aims to individualize and adapt strategies that promote self-efficacy for behavior changes leading to a healthier, active lifestyle. PIT was developed via an innovative collaboration of fitness based experts at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Wellness Center and ASD and NDD experts in the Division of Developmental Pediatrics at MUSC. The PIT program utilizes a 4-prong foundation to promote 1) fitness, 2) nutrition and weight management, 3) socialization, and 4) stress reduction, and adapts strategies to promote success with this unique population.

Target Audience: Nurses, Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Occupational Therapists and any other healthcare professional

Educational Level: Introductory

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify ideas of promoting comprehensive wellness in youth with ADS and NDD.

Length of Course: 1 hour

Credit Statements:

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 1.0 contact hours.

Social Workers: This program has been approved by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners for 1.0 clock hours of non-social work continuing education.

Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists: This program has been approved for 1.0  hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under its accreditation by the SC Board of Examiners for Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Psycho-Educational Specialists.

ATOA Credit: This course has been approved for .1 CEUs (1.0 clock hours) by AOTA
