Course Description: With approximately 80% of US mothers intending to breastfeed their newborns in the hospital. In South Carolina, 75% of mothers are breastfeeding at birth with only 37% are still breastfeeding at 6 months and only 13% are still exclusively breastfeeding at 6 months. Learn skills and techniques on how to assist and counsel mothers in the hospital, overcoming difficulties and removing barriers by exploring a "new" method: Biological Nurturing to help mothers reach their breastfeeding goals. Also learn about the BabyFriendly Hospital Initiative, the designation process and how to utilize the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding in supporting all mothers and their newborns. This course is designed with the hospital nurse (L&D, newborn, or mother/baby) or breastfeeding/healthcare professional in mind.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss biological nursing as it applies to breastfeeding in the hospital setting.
- Examine the criteria for a hospital's Baby-Friendly designation.
Length of Course: 2.5 hours
Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 2.5 contact hours.
