Course Description: This presentation provides an overview of dental care for individuals with special health care needs. The presentation will discuss dental and oral development, the etiology and complications associated with the dental caries process, anticipatory guidance, and common oral conditions in children with special health care needs.

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
Describe normal tooth development.
Identify causes, complications and prevention strategies of the dental caries process.
Discuss the oral conditions, barriers to oral healthcare and caries risk in children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN).
Identify how to perform an oral health examination, implement a preventive program and suggest techniques for optimizing oral care in CSHCN.
Length of Course: 60 minutes
Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 1 contact hour.
