Course Description:

Target Audience: Nurses

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

1)  Discuss the importance of Multidisciplinary inter-professional team concept;  

2) Identify professional affiliates involved in providing care to the sexual assault victim ;

 3) Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the SANE;

4) How to access and review IAFN (InteFNP-Cational Association of Forensic Nursing) publications and guidelines;

5) Name the major structures of the male and female genitalia;

6) Discuss genital examination of normal vs. abnormal findings and identify trauma;

7) Describe the components of the forensic exam;

8) Discuss the components of obtaining a health history;

9) Identify the essential components of a psychological assessment;

10) Identify the essential components of a physical assessment;

11) Identify common mechanisms of injury, patteFNP-Cs of injury, and response to injury;

12) Articulate the steps of evidence collection;

13) Summarize assistive techniques and equipment used with evidence collection;

14) Discuss the importance of documentation;

15) Discuss the dynamics of sexual assault;

16) Describe the role of the SANE in the courtroom as an expert vs. factual witness;

17) Describe psychological reactions to sexual assault;

18) Recognize reasons for non-reporting of sexual assault/ domestic violence;

19) Discuss ethics in working with sexual assault cases;

20) Discuss components of human trafficking, marital rape, domestic violence and date rape;

21) Discuss nursing management of the sexual assault patient.

Length of Course:  24 hours online + 16 classroom hours ( two 8 hour days)

"In order to complete the Adult/ Adolescent SANE course and meet the mandatory 40 hour didactic training requirement for SANE certification, all online modules and in class lectures must be completed as well as scoring a  minimal grade of 80% on the end of course test."  Each module must be completed before moving to the next one.

Credit Statements:

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This continuing education activity is approved for 40 contact hours for licensed nurses.
