Course Description: This course is intended to make participants will be more knowledgeable about the  venipuncture procedure and special procedures for drawing blood.

Target Audience: Licensed Nurses and other healthcare providers 

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Define bloodborne pathogens and modes of transmission

  • Identify Personal Protective Equipment and its’ use
  • Describe workplace practice and Engineering Controls
  • List equipment needed for a routine venipuncture.
  • Explain how to properly identify a client/patient.
  • Explain the importance of post-puncture site care.
  • Explain the rationale for drawing blood below an IV site.
  • State and demonstrate the proper orientation of the bevel for venipuncture.
  • Explain the importance of positioning a client properly for venipuncture.
  • Demonstrate and explain the major steps involved in a venipuncture.
  • Demonstrate how to approach a client for venipuncture.
  • State situations in which capillary collections are advantageous.
  • State some of the possible causes for errors in capillary sample collection.
  • Describe how blood flow can be safely and effectively enhanced when performing a capillary collection.
  • List acceptable sites for obtaining a capillary sample.
  • List supplies needed for this type collection.
  • State the steps for collecting a capillary sample.
  • Describe collection containers/devices for capillary collections.
  • List disadvantages of capillary sticks.

Length of Course:  60 minutes of online lecture + 3 hours of online lab time with lab check-off

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 4.0 contact hours

AHEC Credit: This educational offering provides 0.4 CEUs (4.0 clock hour) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
