Course Description: At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to discuss how obstetrical triage came into use, common errors in obstetric triage, antepartum testing, image testing in pregnancy, and other methods of determining time of birthing a baby. In addition, this course discusses special considerations in labor and delivery such as fetal monitoring, hemodynamic changes in labor, phases of labor, and monitoring in labor. Complications of anesthesia and delivery emergencies are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Identify the challenges of nursing practice in obstetrical triage.
2. Discuss the more common antepartum tests utilized for fetal evaluation.
3. Describe the hemodynamic changes during labor and their implications for patient care.
4. Discuss the care provided to patients receiving obstetrical anesthesia.
5. Discuss the role of the placenta and umbilical cord on pregnancy outcomes.
6. Discuss the most commonly encountered obstetrical emergencies in labor and delivery.
7. Describe the care provided to a patient experiencing cardiac arrest in pregnancy.
8. Identify strategies for safety in perinatal care.
Length of Course: 210 minutes
Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 3.5 contact hours.
