Course Description: This course will provide healthcare workers with the foundations for medical interpreting in the healthcare setting.

Target Audience: All Healthcare providers

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

•Identify federal and state law requirements for healthcare organizations to provide language assistance.
•Build and translate medical terms from Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, root words, and combining forms.
•Identify and define medical terms from a sample medical report.
•Discuss the role of the medical interpreter.
•Apply communication skills.
•Discuss the interpreter responsibilities in the medical setting.
•Recognize the National Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics in the medical interpreting profession.
•List the Code of Ethics.
•Apply the principles of the Code of Ethics.
•Discuss the purpose of the Code of Ethics in the medical setting.
•Recognize culture-specific perspectives and values.
•Discuss how to work with the providers.
•Discuss how to model standards of behaviors in the clinical setting.

Length of Course: 5.5 hours

Credit Statements:

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This continuing education activity is approved for 5.5 contact hours for licensed nurses. 

Social Workers:  This program has been approved for 5.5  clock hours of non-social work continuing education by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners.

Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists:  This program has been approved for 5.5 hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under its accreditation by the SC Board of Examiners for Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Psycho-Educational Specialists.

Dietitians:  5.5 hours of CPE for registered dietitians

Respiratory Care Practitioners:  5.5 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners.

Other: This educational offering provides 0.55CEUs (5.5 clock hour) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
