Course Description: The objectives are to update providers on their responsibilities under the Final HIPAA/HITECH Act Privacy, Security Enforcement and Breach Notification Rules that were effective March 26, 2013.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

1. Gain an in-depth understanding of HIPAA Security, Privacy and Transaction rule.

2. Identify Business Associates and outline how to ensure HITECH HIPAA compliance through a Business Associate Agreement.

3. Identify work flow best practices to achieve and monitor compliance with patient privacy and confidentiality requirements.

4. Understand the new Enforcement rule.

5. Learn how to plan and prepare for HIPAA compliance audits.

6. Review the required HIPAA Security implementation specifications.

7. Walk through the Breach Notification process and Risk Assessment protocol.

8. Identify core elements of a business continuity and disaster recovery compliance plan.

Length of Course: 90 minutes

Credit Statements:

Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 1.5 contact hour.

Dieticians: 1.5 contact hour of CPE for registered dieticians.

Social Workers: This program has been approved for 1.5 clock hours of non-social work continuing education by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners.

Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists: This program has been approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under its accreditation by the SC Board of Examiners for Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Psycho-Educational Specialists.

Respiratory Care Practitioners: 1.5 clock hour will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners.

Massage Therapists: This program has been approved for 1.8 hours of continuing education by the SC Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for Massage Therapy. SC State Provider Number is 2 Expires 6/30/2020.

Others: This educational offering provides 0.15 CEUs (1.5 clock hours) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
