Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to discuss Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen by proxy.

Learning Outcomes:  After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

1-      Describe why Munchausen Syndrome is designated as a factitious disorder

2-      Discuss the typical patient with Munchausen Syndrome and how the diagnosis is made

3-      Discuss the treatment recommendations for Munchausen Syndrome

4-      Identify the most common perpetrators for Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

5-      Describe the victims and general categories for illness induction in Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

6-      Identify common behaviors and motivation of mothers who are diagnosed with Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

7-      Discuss the similarities and differences between a Child Abuser and a Munchausen Perpetrator

8-      Discuss the role of healthcare providers involved in the care of a child being harmed by Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

Length of Course: 60 minutes

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
