Course Description: This course will provide participants with a basic understanding of transgender culture, Healthcare discrimination and disparities for transgender people, methods, policies and procedures to institute to provide culturally competent care to transgender patients, and to discuss privacy and insurance issues as they relate to transgender patients.

Target Audience: All Healthcare professionals

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

•Define transgender people, gender identity, gender expression, sexual identity, sexual orientation, birth sex, gender non-conforming person, transition/affirmation process, female-to-male or transgender man, male-to-female or transgender female, and transsexual and how many people identify as transgender.
•Describe healthcare discrimination and disparities for transgender patients.
•List tips for working with transgender patients.
•Describe the Joint Commission’s Provisions related to the care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients and their policies.
•Describe methods/policies to institute to provide culturally competent care to transgender patients to enhance their experience with the healthcare system.
•Discuss privacy policies/procedures related to transgender patients as they relate to the Privacy Rule and HIPAA.
•Discuss insurance issues transgender patients face.
•Define gender dysphoria and treatment options including types, side effects, and ethical dilemmas.

Length of Course: 75 minutes

Credit Statements:

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 1.25 contact hour.

Respiratory Care Practitioners: 1.25 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners.

Dietitians:  1.25 hours of CPE for registered dietitians.

Non-Social Work:  This program has been approved for 1.25_ clock hours of non-social work continuing education by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners.

Counselors and Therapists: This program has been approved for 1.25 hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under its accreditation by the SC Board of Examiners for Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Psycho-Educational Specialists.

Massage Therapists:  This program has been approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education by the SC Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for Massage Therapy.  SC State Provider Number is 2. Expires 6/30/2020.

Others: This educational offering provides 0.125 CEUs (1.25 clock hours) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
