Course Description:  This course is designed to help nurses understand diverse cultural experiences in the perinatal period.

Target Audience: Licensed Nurses and other interested healthcare workers

Learning Outcomes: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

•Discuss the universality of the birth experience.
•Identify how cultural competence and health literacy impact perinatal care.
•Describe the different needs for modesty by diverse cultures.
•Explain the experience of pregnancy and birth for the major cultural groups in the US.
•Summarize the differences for post partum depression and treatment among ethnic groups.
•Describe the perinatal experience for patients with diverse sexual orientation.
•Discuss the cultural and social influence on infertility, childlessness, family size, family balancing, care decisions, and female circumcision.
•Compare the differences in cultural response to perinatal loss.

 Length of Course: 2 hours

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive 2 contact hours.

Other: This educational offering provides 0.2 CEUs (2 clock hour) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice Standards.
